Methodology
The Artificial Index relies on a structured approach to sourcing, verifying, and presenting financial and product data for the AI ecosystem.
Valuation & Market Cap
- Public Market Cap: Sourced directly from public exchanges. We record historical market caps at significant milestones.
- Private Valuation: Sourced from official funding announcements, press releases, or highly credible financial reporting (e.g., Bloomberg, WSJ, The Information). These are post-money valuations unless otherwise specified.
- AI attribution: Not all of a company's value is AI. Each market cap or valuation event carries an AI attribution percentage — 100% for a pure AI lab such as OpenAI, a smaller share for a diversified company such as Alphabet or for the AI division of a larger private group. Company values shown on the site are the latest market cap or valuation multiplied by that percentage, and are marked with an asterisk (*).
- Total AI Index Value: The sum of the AI-attributed public market caps and private valuations. Public market caps and private valuations are different instruments (daily exchange pricing versus episodic funding rounds), so the index is an indicator of the AI market's scale rather than a tradable figure; the public and private components are always shown alongside it. Subsidiaries are never valued separately, so nothing is counted twice.
Product & Model Tracking
- Entities: We classify entities strictly into Platforms, Products, Models, and Model Families to maintain hierarchy.
- Releases: Release dates correspond to the date of general availability (GA) or public beta, not internal testing dates, unless specifically marked as "Preview".
- Open Source: An entity is marked as "Open Source" only if its weights or source code are available under an OSI-approved license or a widely accepted open-weights license (e.g., Llama 2 license).
Source Policies
Every financial metric and release in our database must have a verifiable source. We link directly to the primary source (press release, SEC filing) whenever available. When secondary sources are used, the metric is marked appropriately.
